IITs and IIMs

The article “IITs: Quality only because of exclusivity” (Business Line, March 31) is thought-provoking and an eye opener to educationalists and policymakers.

Merely increasing the number of IITs and IIMs will not help in enhancing their quality. The quality of education in a large number of engineering colleges and B-schools which offer similar programmes leaves much to be desired.

The standard and motivation of teachers at these institutions (government and private) is deplorable. What is important is to review and strengthen these institutions rather than increase the number of IITs and IIMs.

Universities offering distance education add to the woes; there is no concern for quality so long as the admissions are on the increase.

The Nyquist theorem and probability theory referred to in the article are highly relevant. We need not attempt Six Sigma with huge expenses but economically work with Three Sigma levels of controls.

There is deterioration in quality even among some private universities. The standard and motivation levels of teachers are far below expectations and need to be addressed immediately.

Even the existing IITs and IIMs are feeling the pinch of competent faculty. The governments and policy-makers must wake up to the realities and take urgent action. The article has to be taken seriously by those considering such a proposal.
