Exports & Imports Government - Security Indian missiles get export enquiries: DRDO official Our Bureau Hyderabad, April 2 India developed missiles Akash and Nag have started getting enquiries for exports from several countries, according to Dr Prahlada, Chief Controller (R&D), Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). With more than 20 countries evincing interest in the indigenous missiles, which would cost a lot less compared to competitors, the country is also weighing options of taking a decision to export, he told newspersons here today. In addition to the missiles Akash (air to surface) and Nag (anti-tank), enquiries for the main battle tank, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are also coming. The recently held DefExpo saw many queries from countries, Dr Prahlada said. Under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP), the DRDO has in the past 25 years developed the intermediate-range Agni (surface to surface), Prithvi (surface to air), Akash (air to surface), Trishul (triple role) and Nag (anti-tank) missiles. Dr Prahlada said in July the final trials for the Nag missile would be conducted and thereafter it would be ready for induction. The Akash missile has been offered to the user, while the Trishul project has been closed and the missile offered to the Air Force. The Beyond Visual Range Astra missile, which is the next generation type, is under development and the first trial would be held this year. It should be ready for induction around 2011, he added. Dr Prahlada, who was here as Chairman of the technical committee for the upcoming First World Congress on Disaster Management (WCDM-2008), to be held here in October said “Pro-active preparedness was necessary to manage disasters, for which coordination across Governments, NGOs, corporates, local bodies and scientific institutes was necessary.” Participants from over 50 countries and various organisations in the country are expected to participate in the four day conference beginning October 21 at the National Academy of Construction (NAC). The conference is being organised by the Disaster Management, Infrastructure and Control Society (DMICS). More Stories on : Exports & Imports | Security
