Pharmaceuticals New drug to help hypertensives Our Bureau Hyderabad, April 2 Are you hypertensive? If yes, you can perhaps hope to lower your worries or tension by one notch soon. A promising new drug ‘Telmisartan’, has emerged as a potent help to the growing number of people with this condition, according to a landmark global study. The performance of Telmisartan has been on par with Ramipril, which is considered the current gold standard, in reducing the risk of cardiac-related deaths. Hypertension, which is related to abnormal blood pressure, is one of the leading causes of mortality in India and the number of hypertensives is expected to touch 200 million by 2025, said Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, which is bringing the results of the global study called ‘OnTarget’ to India in association with the American College of Cardiology (ACC). OnTarget is one of the world’s largest heart disease studies involving 31,620 patients with hypertension across 40 countries. Findings were presented at the 57th Annual ACC conference in Chicago on March 31, 2008. The OnTarget trial showed that Telmisartan is well-tolerated treatment option in high-risk cardiovascular patients and was as effective as Ramipril in preventing heart attacks, stroke, hospitalisations for heart failure and deaths, according to Prof Salim Yusuf, lead investigator and Director of the Population Health Research Institute at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada. The Vice-President, Sales of Dr Reddy’s, Ms Ritha Chandrachud said “We are sure that this trial will be of immense use to doctors in treating hypertensive patients”. Telmisartan is the only angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), to have proven cardio & vascular protective benefits, beyond the simple blood pressure (BP) reduction in high risk population, a release said. The release of the OnTarget study is likely to take Telmisartan, which has a current standing of ninth in preference among anti-hypertensives, to the top three, the release said.
