Industry has responded to PM’s call for inclusive growth: CII
Our Bureau
New Delhi, April 2 The Indian industry has responded to the call of the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, to create more inclusive growth and set out areas of interventions, said Dr Jamshed J. Irani, Chairman, Council for Affirmative Action, CII and Director, Tata Sons.
Reporting back on the progress made by CII members on the affirmative actions in the last one year, he said thrust was given to four areas of entrepreneurship development, employability creation, education and workplace interventions (employment).
Dr Irani said that in the first year of work (2007), CII focused on the creation of delivery models in each of these areas, which can be scaled up in the future and can be replicated. It has also created a Code of Conduct on Affirmative Action, which has already been adopted by 579 of CII-member companies.
On the area of employability creation, Dr Irani said CII has so far trained 22,580 candidates from the SC/ ST communities, for making them more employable.
It has also partnered with many educational institutions, NGOs and technical colleges across the country to run a number of courses, which aim at imparting soft skills, vocational training and skills development.
In the area of entrepreneurship development, Dr Irani said the thrust has been to create income streams for people, who have entrepreneurial talent so that they can create employment in turn. So far, 1,594 candidates are in the process to becoming entrepreneurs.
The industry body is also organising regular awareness programmes across the country for greater sensitivity on the issue regarding non-discrimination of SC/STs at workplace.
