Meet stresses need to address food security, water crisis
Our Bureau
Hyderabad, April 2 International Water Management Institute (IWMI) has said it would be tough for the world if it fails to address the ongoing crises of food security and water.
Addressing the inaugural of the partners meeting of IWMI-Tata Water Policy Programme here on Wednesday, Dr Colin J. Chartres, Director-General of IWMI, said the world faced the challenge of feeding 2.5 billion more population by 2025-30. In India alone, there were 200 million poor people.
The three-day meeting is being held at International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) at Patancheru near here.
He said increasing urbanisation would increase pressure on water resources as the lobbying power of urbanites was far more than their peers in villages. He also felt that bio-fuel too would add pressure. For example, it would take 3,000 litres of water to produce one litre of bio fuel in India and China.
He said IWMI was studying the possible impact of climate change in the basins of the rivers Krishna and Ganges.
Mr Arun Pandhi, Programme Manager of Sir Ratan Tata Trust, said it spent 62 per cent of its Rs 45-crore budget on rural livelihood. This year too, the spend would be in that bracket though the budget rose to Rs 100 crore.
