Contract jobs: Haldia Petro union defers strike plan

Our Bureau

Kolkata, April 2 The CITU-affiliated Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd Employees’ Union has agreed to defer the proposed strike on April 8. The strike was called in demand of regular employment of a section of contractual employees.

Co-promoted by the State Government and the private sector TCG Group, HPL has been operating without any interruption ever since it was commissioned in 2001.

‘Positive gesture’

In a statement issued today Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd (HPL) said that the positive gesture on the part of the union would help resolve the issues through discussion. “Representatives of union and the management will resume discussions shortly to arrive at an amicable solution,” the company said.

The company previously said that over the years, a number of contractual personnel have been taken onto the HPL rolls, in different disciplines at core activities through an established procedure based on requisite qualifications, skills and competencies to meet the requirement of the company.
