Karnataka gets Rs 6 cr for beach tourism development

Malpe (Udupi district), April 2 The Union Government has sanctioned Rs 6.4 crore for the development of beach tourism circuit along coastal Karnataka, according to Mr C. Somashekhara, Director, Department of Tourism, Karnataka.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Paradise Lagoon’ – the houseboat facility by Paradise Clubs and Resorts – at Kemmannu Hoode near Malpe in Udupi district on Wednesday, he said this money will help develop beach tourism along the 320-km stretch in coastal Karnataka. Plans are there to develop eight beach spots along coastal Karnataka in the beach circuit, he said.

Added to this, the Union Government has sanctioned Rs 3.5 crore for the development of eco tourism in the State and Rs 6.5 crore for the development of northern circuit in Karnataka.

Tourism products

Karnataka has variety of tourism products including beach tourism, eco tourism, pilgrim tourism, adventure tourism and heritage tourism, among others, he said.

Thanking the Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) for extending the houseboat facility for Paradise Lagoon, Mr Y.R. Manohar, Managing Director, Paradise Club and Resorts, said that coastal Karnataka with its enriching and diverse experiences is a tourism hub of the future.

“We believe that this initiative of providing houseboat facility will set tone for backwater tourism in coastal Karnataka,” he said.

Paradise Lagoon has two houseboats. The houseboat has sun deck, living and dining area, and two private living quarters. Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of Paradise Lagoon, Mr N.D. Tiwari, Managing Director, JLR, said that JLR has 16 properties in the State. The occupancy rate of Kabini property of JLR is 90 per cent. He claimed that no other wildlife property has such a high occupancy rate.

He said JLR is looking at the possibility of providing water rafting and jungle lodges facility at Varahi in Udupi district. It will also look into the facility of extending eco tourism facility at Ottinene in Udupi district, he added.
