Prices and the common man

The common man is hit by the falling markets and rise in food prices (Business Line, April 1, 2008). It has been rightly pointed out in the editorial that programmes to increase the income of the poor need time-bound delivery mechanisms. According to 2004-05 data, 80 crore people fall below the international poverty level. The phenomenon of decrease in demand and increase in prices itself is an irony. Is the economy designed to create more crorepatis at the cost of ordinary people?

Decentralisation of power should not lead to corruption. The daily per capita consumption expenditure (DPCE) of less than $2 can be increased by concentrating development activities in the rural and urban areas and focussing on the needy.
