Aditya Birla March cement sales up 2.8%

Mumbai, April 3 Aditya Birla Group cement sales in March rose 2.8 per cent to 3.03 million tonnes (mt) from a year earlier.

Production was up 4.9 per cent at 3.03 mt in March, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

Sales in the financial year 2008 jumped 4.5 per cent to 30.55 mt from 29.2 mt a year earlier, while the production increased 4.8 per cent to 30.6 mt from 29.24 mt logged in the corresponding period last year.

The group commenced production at its new 1.30-mt per annum grinding unit at Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.

Grasim Industries shares on the BSE lost 2.15 per cent to Rs 2,561, while UltraTech, another Aditya Birla Group company, gained 1.12 per cent to Rs 809.

Ambuja Cements

Ambuja Cements has reported a 16 per cent rise in March sales at 1.71 mt against 1.47 mt registered in the corresponding period last year.

Production in March was up 23 per cent at 1.76 mt against 1.43 mt last year.

Between January and March despatches grew 10 per cent to 4.75 mt (4.32 mt), while production rose 13 per cent to 4.82 mt (4.28 mt).

Ambuja Cements stocks on the BSE were marked up by 1.08 per cent to Rs 122.
