Osmania University to offer M.Tech in disaster management

M. Somasekhar

Hyderabad, April 3 The Osmania University (OU), Hyderabad, has decided to offer an M.Tech in disaster management from the academic year 2008-09.

The course, the first such to be offered in the country, will be for two years and have an intake of 18 students, said Prof. D.N. Reddy, Principal, Engineering College of OU.

While the University of Roorkee has been offering an engineering degree in Earthquake Engineering and some India Institutes of Technology (IITs) offering some courses in disaster management related subjects, the M.Tech from OU would be the first comprehensive programme, he told Business Line.

The post-graduate degree programme will commence in August with an intake of 18 students (5 sponsored from the industry or institutes), he said.

Another first that the OU College of Engineering (which has been selected for upgradation as an IIT) has is the M.Tech in Infrastructure, which it launched last year.

The two-year post-graduate degree programme attracted only 5 students last year. However, this year the response is huge and will have 18 students. The big demand from infrastructure companies for qualified civil engineers is drawing attention to these courses, he said.

The OU College has also been running a PG course in Construction Engineering Management, totally sponsored by the industry, with an intake of 25 students for the past five years, he added.

The college, which has a renewable energy centre with the support of the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources, recently got support from Titan Energy to develop and demonstrate a solar photovoltaic module of 5 kV, with multiple applications.
