Spices & Condiments States - Tamil Nadu Rains hit chilli farmers in Ramanathapuram Our Correspondent Madurai, April 4 A preliminary estimate has put a crop loss in chilli cultivation in more than 9,000 hectares in Ramanathapuram district due to the recent bout of unexpected rains, according to the District Collector, Mr R. Kirloshkumar. Chilli is the second major crop in the district, next to paddy. Due to the recent rains, most of the chilli plants have either become rotten or unsuitable for harvest. There is no chance of revival of the crop as it would not stand inundation of water, according to Mr G. Mahalingam, Joint Director of Agriculture. The State Government has announced compensation for chilli farmers. While Rs 2,000 would be given to farmers for each hectare under rain-fed cultivation, it would be Rs 4,000 for each hectare under cultivation though irrigation, sources said.
