Mumbai, April 5 The LPG variant of Hyundai i10, the latest model from the Korean carmaker, which has attracted good demand in the Indian and overseas markets, will be launched next year.

“We will launch alternative fuel variants of i10 sometime next year,” Mr H.S. Lheem, Managing Director, Hyundai Motors India, told Business Line on the sidelines of JK Tyre Indian Car of the Year 2008 award ceremony in Mumbai.

The company will launch LPG variants of Santro and Accent in July-August this year. The LPG variant of Santro was unveiled at the Auto Expo in January. About challenges in terms of fuel standards and environmental norms, Mr Lheem said, “Our models meet all the European standards. i10 now meets Euro IV emission standards and it will be upgraded to Euro V in a year’s time”.

Mr Lheem indicated that Hyundai places great importance for environment-friendly innovations and is in the process of making more such variants. “We implement strictest emission control measures in all our models and we undertake to install systems for more environment-friendly fuels such as CNG and LPG,” he said.

Production volume

About the production volume of i10, he said, “On a daily basis, we are currently producing 1000 units of i10 in two shifts. In response to the huge customer demand we plan to start three-shift production.” Mass production at the new engine factory in Chennai will begin in the second half of this year. The new facility will produce engines exclusively for i10 and i20, he said.

Mr Lheem said that the premium hatchback i20 would be launched by the end of this year. “The prototypes are ready. We are doing all kinds of test now. The car will be sent for homologation soon. We will produce 10,000 units per month in the initial stage,” he said. i20 will meet Euro V emission standards.
