Petroleum India, Germany will undertake studies on oil exploration in Ganga basin Our Bureau Hyderabad, April 5 India and Germany will jointly undertake geophysical studies of importance in the Ganga basin for oil exploration. Under the Indo-German collaboration, with funding from the DFG of Germany and the Department of Science and Technology, a project covering the North-South corridor in India (from Cape Camarine to Leh) to study the seismo-tectonics of the Himalayan terrain will also be taken up. At a recently held five-day Indo-German workshop, major research projects covering the North-South corridor and the East-West, along the country, were discussed. The workshop focussed on electro-magnetic induction studies for complex geological problems. It was organised by the Hyderabad-based, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), at Lonavala near Mumbai. Mr I.L. Budhiraja, President of Reliance Industries Ltd (E&P) said the induction method was gaining importance in recent years in the fields of oil, geothermal and mineral exploration. Millions of dollars were being spent by the oil industry for off-shore electromagnetic surveys, engaging the consultancy and data acquisition services by multinational companies. The workshop was co-ordinated by Dr T. Harinarayana from India and Dr Heinrich Brasse from Frie University, Berlin. Dr V. P. Dimri, Director of NGRI and Prof Archana Bhattacharya, Director of the Indian Institute of Geomagnetism (Mumbai) explained the roles of their respective institutes. About 80 participants — ten from Germany and 70 from India — representing 26 different institutions took part, according to a press release from the NGRI here. The German side also agreed to guide the young Indian researchers and said they would also like to send German students to India under different collaborative programmes.
