Roadways Road safety panel to be set up soon Our Bureau New Delhi, April 7 A proposal to set up the Committee on Road Safety and Traffic Management, a body that would look after the issues involved in maintaining safety on the National Highways, is in the final stages of approval. The Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, Mr T.R. Baalu, said this while addressing the 17th meeting of the consultative committee of Members of Parliament attached to his Ministry here today. Similar boards would be set up in the States also, he stated in a release issued here today. Driving licencesHe also said that a Rs 148-crore proposal has recently been approved for creating State and National Registers of driving licences and registration certificates envisaging inter-linking of all Regional Transport Offices. This would enable creation of authentic database for road transport sector, ensuring transparency in the process of registration of motor vehicles and issuance of driving licences. The project period is two years. It would check issuance of fake driving licenses, registration certificates and lead to better enforcement of the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act/ Rules, he added. More Stories on : Roadways
