A.J. Vinayak Mangalore, April 7 New Mangalore Port handled 36.01 million tonnes (mt) of traffic during 2007-08 as against 32.04 mt in the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 12.41 per cent. Sources in New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) told Business Line that various factors such as growth in rail-bound and iron ore traffic and availability of deep-draught multipurpose berth contributed a lot for the increase in the traffic during 2007-08. While the railway-bound traffic registered a growth of more than 100 per cent, container cargo witnessed an increase of 24 per cent during the year. Sources said that the port handled 6.1 mt (3 mt) of railway-bound cargo during 2007-08. During the period, the port handled 21,460 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers as against 17,290 TEUs in 2006-07. Coal handlingSources said that coal traffic registered a growth of more than 60 per cent during the year. They attributed this to proper planning and reallocation of yards for handling coal cargo. During the period, the port handled 1.69 mt (1.04 mt) of coal cargo. New Mangalore Port handled around 1.97 mt million tonnes of cargo of Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Ltd during 2007-08 as against 6.46 lakh tonnes in the previous fiscal. The availability of deep-draught multipurpose berth has helped improve the performance, as it could handle bigger ships, they said. The total number of vessels handled at the port during 2007-08 stood at 1,144 as against 1,015 in the previous fiscal. More Stories on : Shipping
