Environment States - Kerala Kerala to have separate set-up to study climate change Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, April 7 The Kerala Government will have a separate set-up to study the issues related to climate change and prepare itself in advance to face them. The new set-up would be implemented by the State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, said here on Monday while inaugurating a function in connection with the World Health Day. He said that the damages caused by climate change were leading to problems on the cleanliness front and the attack of diseases became more intense and widespread during rainy seasons. The Government has drawn up a four-month action plan to beat back the menace, which will be implemented throughout the State. Waste disposal issueThe Chief Minister said that solid waste disposal had become a big problem in Kerala. There was a Supreme Court directive to make arrangements for sold waste disposal before December 31, 2003. But even after five years since the deadline, the State could not reach the goal. He pointed out that the State was home to the maximum number of healthcare institutions in the country. However, things have reached a point where even hospital wastes are being dumped in public places. There was a need to tighten the legislation to refuse licenses to hospitals that do not have arrangements for waste management, he said. Another problem that has come up recently is electronic waste and it has come to the notice that such wastes are being brought into the country by containers from countries such as the US. The problem had reached Kerala also and the people in the State should be vigilant against it, Mr Achuthanandan said. More Stories on : Environment | Kerala
