Avesthagen launches ‘green’ plastic

In tie-up with French company Limagrain

Our Bureau

Bangalore, April 8 Avesthagen Ltd has announced the launch of eco-friendly, biodegradable plastic made of cereals in the country in a tie-up with Limagrain, its French collaborator. It said this was India’s first 100 per cent biodegradable plastic.

Details of the products or Avesthagen’s role in the bio-plastic venture were not immediately available.

This bio-plastic takes 120 days to decompose under normal conditions and is made by mixing whole cereal grains like wheat, maize and many Limagrain varieties with a biodegradable polymer in a proprietary proportion. The conventional plastic in contrast does not degrade and stays unchanged in the soil for centuries.

“The innovative biodegradable plastic is India’s first product aimed to curb white pollution and the hazards of environmental pollution,” Avesthagen said in a release. Its Founder and CMD, Dr Villoo Morawala-Patell, said, “This is our way of contributing back to the environment we live in. Avesthagen would continue the work to introduce more environment friendly products.”

Alternative biodegradable materials are the need of the hour, with an annual usage of over 150 million tons of non-degradable plastic, the release said.

Bioplastics are used from medical implants and drug delivery devices to disposable nappies and plant pots; however, the cost of developing them can be 2-10 times that of the familiar plastic- which also uses up precious non-renewable resources like petroleum.
