Karaikal to implement job scheme from May 1

Karaikal, April 8 The National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme will be implemented in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry from next month (May 1), said Mr N. Vasanthakumar, Karaikal Collector, here on Tuesday.

After holding a meeting about the implementation of the NREG scheme with the representatives of farmers associations, ayacutdars and other leaders of commune panchayats, the Collector said that under the scheme the poor families in rural areas would be provided employment in desilting of irrigation channels, creation of new ponds, laying of village roads, etc for a minimum period of 100 days in a year with a minimum wage of Rs 80 per day.

The Collector said that the wages would be paid through the banks and savings bank accounts would be opened for the beneficiaries under the scheme.
