Deal with US will aid India in technological innovations

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 8 The Indo-US civilian nuclear deal, which is facing opposition from the Government’s Left allies, will help India in technology innovations, besides meeting its demand for energy, industry body Assocham said on Tuesday.

A deal between India and the US would also provide India with an opportunity to reposition itself in the global nuclear energy space, the chamber said.

“Today, the US is willing to consider such a major initiative because India has emerged as a giant economy, a stable democracy. Therefore, India should approach this initiative as a larger opening to international community on nuclear energy,” it said in a statement.

While releasing a study on the proposed deal, Assocham President, Mr Venugopal Dhoot, said the agreement would help India achieve greater nuclear power generation capacities and obtain quicker licences for construction techniques.
