All-party delegation from Kerala to meet PM on crop loss

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, April 9 An all-party delegation from Kerala, led by the Chief Minister, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, will soon leave for Delhi to meet the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, and submit a memorandum seeking assistance to the farmers who suffered loss of crops due to summer rains in the State.

Mr Achuthanandan told newspersons after a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that preliminary reports indicated that paddy crop in 30,000 hectares had been damaged in the rains, of which the crop in 20,000 hectares had been totally lost. While pointing out that Kuttanad in Alappuzha district suffered severe loss of the crop, the Chief Minister flayed the Centre for not giving its approval to the Comprehensive Development Project recommended by the renowned agriculturist, Dr M.S. Swaminathan, for the Kuttanad area. The Cabinet decided to write off the farm loan taken by the two farmers who committed suicide after their crop was lost due to the rains.
