Hyderabad, April 10

Farm produce with the label of organically grown are set to become more visible in the markets soon.

The Hyderabad-based, Deccan Development Society (DDS), has received the first formal permission from the PGS Organic Council of India to use the organic produce emblem on the produce they market.

The DDS, at present operates 42 organic groups on a pilot basis for the PGS system. These farmers do not use chemical fertilisers or pesticides, explained Mr P.V. Satheesh, its Convenor.

The DDS works with over 5,000 women farmers in the Medak district of Andhra Pradesh. Produce generated by about 2,000 of them which would reach the local as well as markets in Hyderabad, would use the PGS label, he told newspersons here.

The PGS Organic Council of India, in collaboration with the International Forum for Organic Agriculture Movement (IFOAM), and the Food and Agriculture Organisation have started the certification system that is totally controlled and monitored by farmers themselves, he said.

Hundreds of farmers groups have come into existence in the last one year, especially in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharastra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh etc.
