Bengal zone I-T collections for 2007-08 exceed target

Kolkata, April 10 The West Bengal zone, for 2007-08, has achieved a best-ever income-tax collection (both personal income-tax and corporate tax) at Rs 12,019 crore, against the targeted Rs 11,638 crore. This is in spite of higher refunds being effected.

Corporate collections from sectors like mining, tea and banks are said to be noteworthy. Among the 100-odd top corporate assesses are names like ITC, Coal India and Birla Group companies.

Mr T.K. Chatterjee, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Kolkata-1, attributed the achievement got despite great odds to factors like effective surveys conducted by his team and the consequent voluntary disclosures, spurt in TDS collections (Rs 3,486 crore against the targeted Rs 3,039 crore) by nearly 50 per cent, and collection of arrears.

Collections from Kolkata alone is put at Rs 11,500 crore. Mr Chatterjee put the assessee strength as on date at 25 lakhs.
