Kolkata, April 10

A 16-member German business delegation from North Rhein Westfalia, Germany, visited Kolkata on Thursday to explore opportunities for business co-operation in diverse sectors such as machine building, construction, energy, environment and food processing.

The leaders of the delegation were Dr Gerhard Eschenbaum, Deputy Executive Director and Director of International Business Division, Duesseldorf Chamber of Industry and Commerce, and Dr Thomas Weiss, Executive, Chamber of Industry and Commerce, North Westphalia.

The visit of the delegation began with the German Consul General in Kolkata, Mr Guenter Wehrmann, and the Regional Director of the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, Mr B.G. Roy, providing members of the visiting delegation with an overview of the business opportunities that exist in eastern India. They dwelt at length on the scope for business co-operation between businessmen here and their German counterparts in specific areas such as machine building, construction, energy, environment, food processing, IT and ITES, iron and steel, leather, etc.

Later, members of the visiting delegation had one-to-one meetings with their Indian counterparts. They also visited some manufacturing units in and around Kolkata.

Perception issues

Later, speaking to newspersons, Mr Wehrmann said the German business community’s perception of the business climate in West Bengal was very different from the ground realities that exist here.
