Our Bureau

Mumbai, April 10 Mercedes-Benz India said that the company sold 1,094 units in the first quarter of 2008, posting 59 per cent growth in volumes over the same period last year. “We have outperformed our expectations,” said Dr Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. He was speaking on the sidelines of the roll out of the 20,000th locally produced Mercedes-Benz at the company’s manufacturing plant at Chikhali near Pune on Wednesday.

The company sold 2,491 premium luxury cars in 2007.

Backed by an aggressive promotional campaign, the company sold 574 units of the new C-Class, which was launched at the Auto Expo in January. This is the latest model manufactured in India and has contributed the most to the overall sales volume of the company in the recent months.

Dr Aulbur said that the company would launch luxury buses in the second half of this year. He also reiterated that the Chakan plant, with a capacity to produce 5,000 passenger cars would be commissioned in January 2009. The new facility in a 100-acre plot, will house separate production lines for passenger cars and commercial vehicles, he said.

Having received good customer feedback for the heavy-duty truck Actros 4840 K, which primarily targets the mining sector, Mercedes Benz will launch other variants of the truck. “The new variants will be suitable for long haulage and operations in construction sector. We will launch them sometime next year,” Dr Aulbur said.
