IIM-A admission process may be delayed

The IIMA had already started taking steps to expand its infrastructural facilities

Ahmedabad, April 10 With the Supreme Court on Thursday ruling in favour of the 27-per cent reservation granted to the OBCs in national institutions, the admission process in the Indian Institute of Management - Ahmedabad (IIMA), scheduled to begin on Friday, is likely to be delayed.

While refusing to react in detail till he had gone through the entire judgment, Prof Samir Kumar Barua, Director, IIMA, said directors of all the six IIMs in the country are expected to take a joint decision shortly on starting the admission process on a fresh date. He informed that the IIMA would abide by the judgment and other laws to implement the reservation for the OBCs.

The IIMA had already started taking steps to expand its infrastructural facilities and made investments to increase its intake capacity to compensate for the loss of seats to the open category students to implement the 27 per cent reservation for the OBCs. The IIMA had in the last academic year admitted 260 students in its flagship, two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGP) course.

It was, however, not clear whether implementation of the expanded capacity could be started from the new academic year, starting in June 2008, if the Centre issued the necessary notification for giving effect to the OBC reservation immediately in the wake of the landmark judgment.
