Railways SWR records 8.3% growth in originating freight handling Our Bureau Mangalore, April 11 The Hubli-headquartered South Western Railway (SWR) zone has registered a growth of 8.3 per cent in originating freight handling during 2007-08. A press release by the SWR said here on Thursday that the zone lifted 46.27 million tonnes (mt) of freight during 2007-08 as against 42.71 mt during 2006-07. During 2007-08, the originating freight earnings of the zone stood at Rs 3,402 crore (Rs 2,641.10 crore), recording a growth of 28.81 per cent. The number of passengers carried by SWR during 2007-08 was 119.56 million, as against 109.69 million the previous fiscal. The originating passenger earnings during the last fiscal stood at Rs 780.83 crore, which is 20.22 per cent more than the previous year’s figure of Rs 649.52 crore. The total originating earnings of SWR during 2007-08 was Rs 4,317.56 crore (Rs 3,375.61 crore). As many as 14 stations have been identified for modernisation during 2008-09. They are: Whitefield, Hindupur, Dharmapuri and Yelahanka in Bangalore division; Bijapur, Gadag, Dharwad, Toranagallu and Londa in Hubli division; and Arsikere, Biruru, Kadur, Tiptur and Harihar stations in Mysore division.
