Railways S-E Rly freight earnings rise 12% Our Bureau Kolkata, April 11 In 2007-08, South Eastern Railway (SER) loaded originating freight traffic of 111 million tonnes compared with 99 mt in 2006-07, thus achieving 12 per cent growth, according to SER sources. The share of iron ore was the largest, 67.3 mt in 2007-08 against 56.3 mt in 2006-07, or a growth of 16 per cent. The earnings from the freight at Rs 5,443 crore (Rs 4,877 crore) showed a growth of 12 per cent. During the period under review, SER handled 185.7 million passengers (178.9 million) or a growth of 3.8 per cent and 3.45 lakh tonnes of parcel (2.85 lakh tonnes) or a growth of 21 per cent. The earnings from passenger services amounted to Rs 721 crore (Rs 644 crore) or an increase of 12 per cent and earnings from parcel Rs 63 crore (Rs 53 crore), a jump of 19 per cent, the source added.
