Coleroon regulators being modernised

G. Srinivasan

Thanjavur, April 11 Modernisation of Coleroon and scouring sluice regulators is under way at Grand Anicut in Thanjavur district. The works assume significance as they will strengthen the age old structure which was constructed by Arthur Cotton in 1839.

“This type of complete and massive modernisation work is being taken up after nearly 168 years,” said Mr Asokan, Executive Engineer, Cauvery Division, Public Works Department.

Yet another feature of the work is that it will remove the quicksand which remained a death bed for many youngsters who ventured for a bath into the Coleroon when the river was filled with water.

“In a year, nearly 20 persons died by drowning in the quick sand. We have now removed them and strengthened the places with square blocks.

These blocks will prevent the horizontal movement of stone basements which were constructed many years ago under the regulators,” Mr Asokan said.

There are thirty arches in Coleroon and five in scouring sluices.

Renovation and strengthening of these arches are underway.

The lime mortar in the arches were removed, exposing the brick structure. Cement slurry is forced on them and a mesh is put up. Later, cement is applied on them.
