ICWAI unveils technicians course

Kolkata, April 12

The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) has launched a certificate course called Accounting Technicians to meet the shortage of entry-level accountants specially in fields such as SME, retail, KPO, BPO and also in Panchayats in rural areas. “There will be a shortage of one million entry-level technicians over the next 10 years,” Mr Chandra Wadhwa, President of the institute, said here on Friday. These accountants are in demand since smaller enterprises cannot afford to hire professionals at a high cost. The new course will enable these sectors to employ trained people at a lower cost, he said. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs had earlier asked both ICWAI and the Association of Chartered Accountants to come up with such a course to bridge the demand-supply gap, he added. Meanwhile, a new Bill on the formation of the council of corporate valuation professionals is expected to be passed in the next session of Parliament. The council will facilitate and govern the activities of professionals responsible for company or property valuations, Mr Wadhwa said.
