Social Security States - Tamil Nadu Insurance for salt workers mooted Nagapattinam, April 13 The Department of Salt is planning to introduce insurance scheme for salt workers and provide them identity cards, said Ms V.V. Lakshmi, Assistant Salt Commissioner of India, Tuticorin, on Friday. Ms Lakshmi, who came here to assess the damages caused to the salt pans in the last month's heavy rains, addressing a function at Kasthurba Gandhi Kanya Gurukulam at Vedaranyam, said that the Salt Department was always committed to the welfare of salt workers. A number of schemes including general health, supply of drinking water, rest sheds for salt workers, welfare of the children of workers, construction of classrooms in schools were being implemented by the department, she said. She distributed several rewards from the Salt Department's welfare scheme to the wards of salt workers from Vedaranyam, Ayakkaranpulam and Vizhundamavadi schools. Mr Vedarathinam, who is also the grandson of freedom fighter Sardar Vedarathinam Pillai, explained the services rendered by the Salt Department for the welfare of the salt workers and their children. He also spoke about the heavy damages caused to the salt pans and salt production by the heavy rains last month in the Vedaranyam area. - Our Bureau
