Railways SE Central Rly handles 121.6 mt freight in 2007-08 Our Bureau Kolkata, April 15 In 2007-08, South East Central Railway (SECR), the country’s largest freight-loading zonal railway, handled a total originating freight traffic of 121.6 million tonnes (mt) against the target of 119 mt, according to the SECR sources. In 2006-07, the throughput was 109.1 mt. The traffic growth in 2007-08 compared to 2006-07, thus, was 12.5 mt or about 11.46 per cent. Item-wise break-ups show that coal was the single largest item of traffic, as much as 88.37 mt (79.03 mt in 2006-07), followed by cement 9.96 (9.6 mt); iron ore 9.64 mt (8.45 mt); pig iron and finished steel 6.48 mt (4.27 mt); foodgrains 2.46 mt (2.24 mt); raw materials for steel plants other than iron ore 1.69 mt (1.63 mt); mineral oil 0.03 mt (0.01 mt); fertiliser 0.03 mt (0.03 mt); containers 0.26 mt (0.36 mt) and others 2.69 mt (3.5 mt). The total freight earning during the year under review amounted to Rs 8235.16 crore against the target of Rs 8,084 crore set for the year and Rs 7290.64 crore earned in 2006-07 compared to 2006-07, the growth in earning was 12.96 per cent. The originating freight traffic target for the current fiscal (2008-09) has been set at 130 mt and for achieving it, the SECR authorities have already initiated certain steps, such as doubling/tripling of important sections and additional loops at certain stations, to add to the line capacity.
