Mr P.C. Jha

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 17 Buoyed by high import growth and a resulting increase in customs duty collections, the Centre’s indirect tax collections have surpassed the revised estimates for 2007-08.

“We have not only achieved a revised estimate of about Rs 2,79,000 crore, but also exceeded it,” Mr P.C. Jha, Chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, told reporters here.

As against the revised estimate of Rs 1,00,766 crore , the Centre’s customs duty collections for 2007-08 stood at Rs 1,04,000 crore. The Centre has, however, fallen short of the revised estimates on excise duty. As against the revised estimate of Rs 1,27,947 crore, Mr Jha said that the Centre’s excise duty collections stood at about Rs 1,25,000 crore.

Service tax

Service tax collections during 2007-08 is estimated at over Rs 50,000 crore even as Mr Jha made it clear that the Revenue Department was yet to collate data for the entire year in respect of the 5.5 lakh registered service tax payers. Mr Jha expressed confidence that the Board would meet budget estimates for 2008-09 on the back of economic growth and more emphasis on “audit and anti-evasion” measures.

On the issue of tax evasion by pan/gutkha manufacturers, he indicated that a production-based levy may be introduced to tackle tax evasion.
