Roadways States - Tamil Nadu Chennai elevated expressway to be realigned R.Y. Narayanan Coimbatore, April 17 The Tamil Nadu Government has accepted the proposal of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for a change in the alignment of the proposed elevated expressway connecting Chennai Port with Maduravoyal. The Government has also agreed to meet 50 per cent of the cost of Rehabilitation and Resettlement (R&R) and Land Acquisition (LA) subject to the condition that the Chennai Port Trust should initially meet the entire cost of LA and R&R estimated to be Rs 345 crore and get the Government’s share reimbursed. A Government Order issued by Mr K. Allaudin, Secretary, Highways Department of Tamil Nadu, said the elevated expressway from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal, proposed by the Ministry of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways of the Central Government, was originally planned to be built along the banks of the Cooum River. The State had granted in-principle approval to NHAI to use one side of the Cooum, according to site conditions for the construction of the elevated expressway subject to certain conditions. Now, NHAI has proposed to change the alignment in such a way that it would pass over the existing Poonamallee High Road from Maduravoyal to Koyambedu and then go along the Cooum River. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,468 crore. More Stories on : Roadways | Tamil Nadu
