Mumbai traders protest raids to curb hoarding

Our Bureau

Mumbai, April 17

The trade bodies of the Mumbai wholesale community are unhappy with the raids conducted in Maharashtra in the wake of rising commodity prices due to inflation, said Mr Mohan Gurnani, President Grain Rice and Oilseeds Manufacturers’ Association, at a press meet.

The traders believe this to be the Government’s drive to harass the small wholesale traders.

Federation of Associations of Maharashtra, GROMA and other trade body members met Mr Vasant Davkhare, Deputy Chairman, Maharashtra Legislative Council and Mr Sunil Tatkare, Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, to protest the raids.

No raid has been conducted at the Navi Mumbai market after the meeting a few days ago.

‘Panic situation’

“There is panic amongst the community due to the sudden raids, we want them to stop,” said Mr Nilesh Veera, Joint Secretary, GROMA.

Mr Mohan Gurnani, President, FAM, said that the pending licences, which were not being given out, were a cause for worry for the traders. Less than one per cent of the traders were found indulging in illegal trading or malpractices in the recent drive, said Mr Veera, stressing that the raids should be stopped.

“Maharashtra is the only State where we have stock limits, which should go away. The State being a deficit one, where we import most of the foodgrains from other states, the Government should be prospective and promote keeping more stock rather than create shortage,” he said.
