No more SEZs along the coast, plead fishermen

Our Bureau

Visakhapatnam, April 17 Fishermen and several others, opposed to the proposed coastal industrial corridor between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada, demonstrated in front of the District Collector’s office here on Thursday and submitted memoranda to the Collector, urging the State Government to revoke GO No. 34, issued for the purpose.

Mr K.S. Chalam, Convener of the Anti-Coastal Corridor Struggle Committee, and Mr T. Sankar, Secretary of the Fishermen’s Welfare Association, said in a joint statement that the corridor would prove ruinous to the fishermen along the coast from here to Kakinada. The customary right of the fishermen would be would be jeopardised.

May affect mangroves

Further, the corridor would ruin mangroves along the coast and it would have disastrous ecological consequences, proving inimical to the growth of fisheries. Therefore, they said, the CRZ regulations should be strictly complied with and no development activity allowed along the coast in Zone 1.

They said the State Government was allowing SEZs right on the coast line, at Rushikonda near here, and other places.

Such activity in the ecologically fragile coastal zones would prove to be dangerous to all sections, not only the fishermen, and therefore the State should immediately put an end to such plans, they pleaded.

The Government should also stop acquisition of valuable coastal lands for SEZs and no more SEZs should be allowed along the coast, they pleaded.
