Human development report to be released soon

K. V. Kurmanath

Hyderabad, April 17 The Centre for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), a renowned socio-economic research institute, has completed the first ever Human Development Report (HDR) for Andhra Pradesh.

Commissioned by the Planning Department of Andhra Pradesh, the HDR focuses on major indicators that gauge the quality of life in the State. Albeit a little late in commissioning such a report, Andhra Pradesh is expected to come out with this every two years. Almost 20 States in the country have already commissioned such reports.

“The HDR has chapters on agriculture, women, governance, environment, macro-economic indicators, rural non-farm activity, health and education,” Prof S. Mahendra Dev, Director of CESS, told Business Line.

The HDR, divided into 14 chapters, also has a Human Development Index at district level. Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, is likely to release the report next month. Madhya Pradesh was the first State to prepare such a report about a decade ago.

The institute would also come out with a separate, detailed publication, throwing light on each of the subjects mentioned in HDR. This publication would have analytical, background reports on various human development indicators mentioned in the HDR.
