DoT restricts ‘certain’ Blackberry services

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 17 Blackberry users in the country may get disrupted services as the Department of Telecom has asked telecom operators not to provide certain features offered by Research In Motion’s (RIM) BlackBerry until monitoring systems are put in place. The move comes after security agencies raised concerns against BlackBerry usage on the ground that it posed a risk as emails sent through it could not be traced or intercepted.

“Instructions have been issued to all mobile service providers, inter alia, asking them not to connect or provide/run certain BlackBerry services unless the required monitoring systems are in place. The DoT has also held meetings with mobile service providers, the Blackberry vendor — RIM — and other stake holders to resolve the issue,” Minister of State for Communications and IT, Mr Jyotiraditya Scindia, told the Parliament in a written reply.

While the exact nature of the partial ban is not known, industry sources indicated that e-mails sent from one Blackberry to another Blackberry may be barred.

Reacting to the directives, GSM operators said that they supported the Government and would abide by the decision. BlackBerry services are offered in India by Airtel, Reliance Communications, Vodafone Essar and BPL Mobile.
