Mangalore SEZ to construct barrages across two rivers

The proposed barrage locations are near Polali and near Maragodanagodi on Gurupur River, and at Sarapadi and Jakribettu on Nethravathi River.

Mangalore, April 18 Mangalore SEZ (Special Economic Zone) Ltd has said the Karnataka Government has given permission for constructing two barrages each across Nethravathi River and Gurupur River to store and draw water at 15 MGD (million gallons a day) for 90 summer days.

A press release by Mr A.G. Pai, Chief Operating Officer of the Mangalore SEZ, said here on Friday that the Bangalore-based Consulting Engineering Services has been awarded the work of detailed engineering study for designing of barrages, and fixing the height of barrages without inundating any land along the bank of rivers.

This agency has to carry out topographical and geo-technical survey at proposed barrage locations — near Polali and near Maragodanagodi on Gurupur River, and at Sarapadi and Jakribettu on Nethravathi River.

Stating that the Mangalore SEZ is carrying out the above works after due studies and after obtaining necessary permissions, the release said it shall keep the relevant village panchayats informed regarding the commencement of surveys.

Eco clearance

The two locations each on Nethravathi and Gurupur rivers have been identified for storing water by constructing barrages without inundating any private land.

The sourcing of water for the Mangalore SEZ from the two rivers has been cleared by Union Ministry of Environment and Forests as part of the environmental clearance for the project, it said.

The release said the Mangalore SEZ project has been notified as a sector-specific SEZ in 1,453 acres of land adjacent to MRPL, and the water requirement for this is to be met based on a feasibility study conducted by the SEZ through consultants.

The study report has identified three water sources — from three sewerage treatment plants of Mangalore, reservoir created within SEZ land, and from two rivers.
