Education Variety - Fashion States - Kerala NIFT Kannur centre inauguration today Our Bureau Thiruvananthapuram, April 18 The Kannur centre of the National Institute for Fashion Technology (NIFT) will be inaugurated on Saturday. The foundation stone for NIFT’s own campus in Kannur will also be laid tomorrow. According to officials of the Kerala Industries Department, the proposed centre in Kannur will be the ninth centre of NIFT in the country. The NIFT Kannur centre will function from the premises of the Institute of Handloom and Textiles Technology-Kannur till NIFT’s own campus is ready in a couple of years. CoursesThe NIFT Kannur centre is expected to offer two courses this year itself, the officials added. The NIFT centre is expected to help increase textiles exports from Kannur, which is home to the maximum number of textile units in the State. Last year, textiles exports from the Kannur region were estimated to be Rs 350 crore. Besides offering courses in fashion technology, the NIFT centre in Kannur is expected to assist Kerala’s textile industry in areas such as development of designs and capacity building. NIFT’s Kannur campus will come up on a 12-acre site near the town. The Union Minister for Textiles, Mr Shankarsinh Vaghela, will inaugurate the centre and also lay the foundation stone for the campus.
