Protecting ships from pirate attack

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has welcomed the decision of the French Government to seek agreement within the United National Security Council on measures that would protect shipping off the coasts of countries vulnerable to attacks by pirates. Among other possible actions, countries would be asked to consent to foreign naval forces entering territorial waters, according to IMO statement. It might be noted that the French Navy had to intervene recently for the release of the crew on board a French cruise ship Ponant that was seized by the pirates in the Gulf of Aden off the coast of Somalia.

The intention of the French Government to seek agreement within the UNSC on measures that would protect shipping from pirates will be supplementary to the efforts, initiated by France and subsequently undertaken by the Netherlands and Denmark, to protect vessels carrying humanitarian aid delivered by the World Food Programme to Somalia, it is learnt.
