The Hindu Business Line : Science & Tech Ministry, HSBC India join hands for climate change forum

New Delhi, April 21 The Ministry of Science and Technology and HSBC on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding to form an ‘Earth Sciences Forum’. The forum would focus on providing solutions related to climate change through participation from industry, NGOs, academia and Government.

To be chaired by Mr Kapil Sibal, Minster of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, and co-chaired by Ms Naina Lal Kidwai, Group General Manager and Country Head, HSBC India, the forum would consist of a Climate Change Leadership Council comprising various stakeholders.

Besides, the forum would also conduct awareness programmes across the country to demonstrate profitable low carbon growth strategies. The workshops would be targeted at cities with high number of SMEs that are carbon intensive such as iron and steel, electricity, automotive, oil and mining amongst others, said a statement.

The workshops would cover a range of issues, including sustainable use of natural resources, responsible financing of industries which rely heavily on natural resources, investing in green business models such as renewable energy and research and technology advancement to lower the carbon emissions.

“Through the launch of the forum we have created a platform where informed people and general public can put forth their views and help find ways to mitigate the impact of climate change on all of us,” said Mr Sibal on the occasion.

Ms Kidwai said that she hoped that the forum would lead not only towards a constructive dialogue on climate change but also active participation from all stakeholders.
