Survey on attitude to water conservation

People cared for conserving water but only 15 per cent said they reused water.

Our Bureau

Bangalore, April 22 Residents of Bangalore expressed an overwhelming support to the cause of water conservation but did little to follow their intent.

According to a survey by an independent organisation, 28 per cent of the respondents felt that individual efforts at conserving water could make big difference.

Mr Chandrashekar Hariharan, Chief Executive Officer of Biodiversity Conservation India Ltd, said rather than expecting restraints from water users, it was important that urban planners devise and implement measures to enhance water reuse.

There were many techniques and tools that could help conserve water such as low flow showers and taps at homes, swimming pools that avoid evaporation and help in replenishments, he said.

The survey, aimed at understanding the behavioural pattern and attitude towards water conservation, was conducted among 400 respondents in the city in the age group of 21 to 50 years. Sixty per cent were graduates or post-graduates with monthly income of more than Rs 20,000.

It said 64 per cent in the city spent more than Rs 200 per cent on water consumption every month while 12 per cent spent in excess of Rs 500.

Households used the maximum water for washing clothes, said the survey, adding there were people who cared for conserving water but only 15 per cent said they reused water, 23 per cent consciously reduced usage of water during summer.
