Plea to scrap extra duties on imported liquor

K. Giriprakash

Bangalore, April 22 The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) is learnt to have objected to the Maharashtra Government’s decision to impose additional duties or a ‘special fee’ on imported liquor.

The SWA pointed out that Maharashtra had in November 2007 levied a special fee on a banded basis involving either a flat rate of Rs 300 per bulk litre or an ad valorem rate that varies between 75 per cent and 200 per cent on the value of the product, with the higher rate being levied.

“The Association and local industry representatives continue to assess the implications of the system and its compatibility with WTO rules. There are significant concerns that the system is operating in a discriminatory manner and we hope early steps will be taken to ensure that imported and domestic spirit drinks are taxed on a fair and equal basis in Maharashtra,” a spokesperson said.
