Spencer’s Retail launching own CRT colour TV range

Our Bureau

Chennai, April 25 Spencer’s Retail Ltd, part of the $3.2-billion RPG group, is planning to launch its own range of conventional CRT (cathode ray tube) colour TVs under the brand name Yashika.

Currently, the retail major is test marketing the TV range in select markets.

The TVs, manufactured in China, will be exclusively marketed in India by Spencer’s through its retail outlets. This will see a national launch in a couple of months from now.

Portfolio extension

“This is only an extension of our present product portfolio of consumer electronics and kitchen appliances,” said Mr Atanu Batabyal, Vice-President (Operations), Spencer’s Retail Ltd.

The retail chain recently launched its own range of consumer electronics and kitchen appliances under the brand Gerat. It currently has electric rice cookers, vacuum cleaners, DVD players, juicers and iron boxes. According to Mr Batabyal, the products are made to “Spencer’s specifications” in China, imported and marketed by the retailer.

“Though we are food-first retailer and have established Spencer’s-branded food and homecare products, we also want to have our own brand of consumer electronics and kitchen appliances,” he said, adding the product portfolio will expand further in the months to come.

Revamping stores

Spencer’s Retail is also in the process of revamping its existing stores in the country. Today, Mr C.K. Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director of FMCG major CavinKare, unveiled Spencer’s new-look large-format store in Chennai.

On the occasion, Mr G. Murali, Business Head, Tamil Nadu, Spencer’s Retail, said the refurbished store will also stock organic food and select range of international cuisine ingredients including Thai, Mexican and Chinese.

“We have also added a live bakery, grilled chicken & Shawarma counters in the dine-in section for the convenience of the shoppers,” said Mr Murali.

Spencer’s Retail currently has 490 stores across the country and is in the process of expanding it to 600 during the current year with a targeted topline of Rs 1,300 crore for this fiscal.
