Urban heritage resort at Madurai

Our Correspondent

Madurai, April 27

An urban heritage resort of five-star category ‘Heritance Madurai’, promoted by ETL Hospitality Services Ltd, a subsidiary of ETL Infrastructure Services Ltd, Chennai, was launched in a function held in the city here.

Coming up on a 17.18-acre site at Kochadai (belonging to the erstwhile Madura Coats Club) in the outskirts of the city, the resort built at an estimated cost of about Rs 67 crore, including the land, will be open for the public by July. The resort will have 81 rooms, including 35 villa Rooms, two suit rooms, eight club rooms and 36 deluxe rooms and other facilities. Originally as a Club, designed and conceptualised by Sri Lanka’s architect, Mr Geoffrey Bawa, the structure is further developed by his understudy, Mr Vinod Jayasinghe, with materials and resources from in and around Madurai and seeks to blend South Indian colonial charm and world class modern luxury.

‘The central location of Madurai as a gateway to south and Kerala is the reason for the promotion of the resort and we see good potential’ said Mr S. Thiagarajan, CEO, ETL Infrastructure Services. Another resort is being promoted at Pudukottai and would be ready towards the end of the year, he added.

Solar power is used for heating water and 50 per cent of lighting in the resort. Efforts would be taken to get rated as a ‘green building’ by the US-based rating agency LEEDS, added Mr Sankar Menon, Chairman, ETL Hospitality Services.
