Letters Rising prices The prices of vegetables, fruits, cereals and many other essential commodities daily consumed by the common man have skyrocketed in recent months. This is only to be expected considering that agricultural lands are continuously shrinking, fertility of the lands is declining, greedy middlemen are pocketing most of the difference between the cost of agricultural production and the ultimate price paid by the retail consumer, leaving little or no net income to the farmers. If the government is serious about preventing farmer suicides and mitigating the suffering of the poor consumers, it could allow the farmers to sell fresh fruits directly so that they benefit financially and the health of the passengers is better protected.
