IT parks set to take off in Madurai

Expected to generate employment for over 1 lakh professionals

Our Correspondent

Madurai, April 28 With the laying of the foundation stones for two IT parks by the Chief Minister, Mr M. Karunanidhi, in a function held here on Saturday, the stress on emerging IT professionals from Madurai and other southern districts to migrate to other cities for employment will be reduced.

Thanks to the initiative of the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT), the two parks — one at Ilandhaikulam in Madurai north taluk over 28.01 acres and the other at Vadapalanji in Madurai South Taluk over 238.58 acres — are together expected to generate employment to around 1,30,000 professionals over time.

The Centre has accorded SEZ status to these IT parks, according to a press release from ELCOT.

At Ilandhaikulam, the Tamil Nadu Government has already allotted lands to leading IT companies — HCL Technologies (5 acres), Honeywell International India Ltd (5 acres) and Tessolve Services Ltd (2.5 acres).

ELCOT will be developing an IT building of 1 million sq ft on 10 acres of land at an approximate cost of Rs 300 crore on a public-private partnership model. ELCOT alone will be developing an IT building of about 50,000 sq ft at an estimated cost of Rs 15 crore and further invest a sum of Rs 30 crore to develop common infrastructure facilities at the site.

At Vadapalanji, the State Government has allotted lands to HCL Technologies Ltd (60 acres), Satyam Computers Ltd (50 acres) and Sutherland Global Services Ltd (5 acres). ELCOT will be developing an IT township over 50 acres at an approximate cost of Rs 500 crore on public-private partnership model at the site.
