Hike in air crash compensation

New Delhi, April 30

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday passed the Amendments to the Carriage by Air (Amendment) Bill, 2008 which seeks to substantially increase the amount an airline will have to pay in case of death or bodily injury to a passenger as also for damage to checked baggage. Introducing the Bill in the Parliament, the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, said that while the compensation for death or bodily injury is proposed to be increased seven times from the existing level of about $20,000 to about $1,40,000, compensation for damage to cargo is proposed to be increased to about $1,400 from the existing about $20. Similarly, the compensation to damage to cargo is proposed to be increased from $20 per kg to $24 per kg, Mr Patel said. The passage of the Bill will now allow Indian travellers to file their claim here even though the journey may have been undertaken outside the country. The Bill is still to be cleared by the Rajya Sabha.
