Petroleum Logistics - Airlines Air fares go up on turbine fuel price rise Our Bureau New Delhi, April 30 Domestic air travel will now become costlier. With the cost of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) in May increasing by more than Rs 5 a litre in the four metros, Jet Airways and low-cost airline SpiceJet announced on Wednesday that the fuel surcharge will increase by Rs 150 for short-haul flights and by Rs 350 for long-haul flights. Most other airlines are also considering increasing the fuel surcharge with a final decision expected in a day or two. While SpiceJet will increase the fuel surcharge from May 1, Jet Airways will increase the surcharge from May 3 with a passenger paying Rs 1,950 for flights up to 750 km and Rs 2,350 for longer flights. Jet Airways also is to increase full fare economy and business class tickets by 10 per cent from May 3. “The hike has been necessitated by the recent increase in ATF prices. “The ATF increases since March this year have inflated the fuel bill of all domestic airlines by $700 million on an annualised basis and pose a threat to the viability of the industry,” said Mr Wolfgang Prock-Schauer, Jet Airways’ Chief Executive Officer.
