Call to speed up debt waiver

Our Bureau

Guntur, April 30

The Union Government should implement the debt waiver scheme announced in the budget by issuing the guidelines and instructing the officials to implement them swiftly so as to enable the farmers to obtain fresh loans by kharif season, said Dr Y. Sivaji, President of the AP Tobacco Growers’ Association.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, Dr Sivaji said that one of the basic objectives of the debt waiver scheme was to relieve the farmers of debt burden as quickly as possible and stimulate economic activity in the agricultural sector.

“If the Union Government dithers on the issue, the basic objective will be defeated,” he said.

He said the Union Finance Minister, Mr P. Chidambaram, had set June 30 as the last date for the completion of the process. “He should stick to it and the farmers should be identified immediately.”
